You Drove Through a King Tide: What Saltwater Does Next
Savannah floods on sunny days now. Saltwater in a vehicle is not the same as fresh, and the damage keeps developing for months.

Saltwater is a different problem
Fresh water in a vehicle is bad and often recoverable. Saltwater is conductive and it does not stop working when it dries, because the salt stays behind. Every connector, ground point, and module it reached now has chloride sitting on the contacts, drawing moisture out of the air indefinitely.
That is why the timeline is so misleading. The car starts, drives, and behaves normally for days or weeks. Corrosion advances quietly at the pins until a circuit goes intermittent, and then another, and the faults appear unrelated to each other and to the afternoon you drove down a flooded street.
What to do immediately
If the engine stalled in the water, do not attempt to restart it. Water drawn into the intake does not compress, and cranking an engine with water in a cylinder bends connecting rods. That single decision separates a manageable repair from an engine replacement.
If it kept running and you are clear of the water, get it somewhere it can be assessed rather than parking it for the weekend. The first day is when rinsing and drying still prevent damage; by the third the chloride has had time to work.
Pull the carpet and padding if water reached the floor. Underneath is bare metal floor pan, and saltwater trapped under padding rusts it through from the inside. The padding itself will not dry in this humidity and will hold salt against the metal for years.
What we inspect
Fluids first. Water in the engine oil turns it milky, and the same check applies to transmission and differential fluid — the differential vents low on the vehicle and takes water in readily. Contaminated fluid gets replaced immediately regardless of how the vehicle runs.
Then the low-mounted electronics. Many vehicles place modules under seats, behind kick panels, or in the footwell, all of which sit below the water line in a six-inch flood. Connectors get opened, inspected, cleaned, and treated with dielectric grease rather than simply dried.
Wheel bearings, brake components, and the exhaust all get evaluated. Brake rotors surface-rust after any water crossing and clean up with normal use; a caliper slide that took saltwater will seize months later.
Fuel is worth checking on a deeper crossing. Water in the tank goes to the bottom, which is exactly where the pump draws from.
Insurance and honesty at resale
Flood damage falls under comprehensive coverage. Report it promptly even if the vehicle seems fine, because a claim opened the same week is straightforward while one opened after the electrical faults begin is an argument about causation.
Photograph the water depth against the wheel if you can do it safely, and note the date, time, and location. Tide data is public and corroborates it.
Saltwater intrusion is a material fact when you sell. It is also increasingly detectable, since buyers here have learned to look for corrosion under carpet and at seat rails. Disclosure protects you.
Avoiding it
Watch the tide tables the way you watch the forecast. The highest tides of the month are predictable, published, and cluster around the new and full moon, and the streets that flood are consistent enough that locals know them by name.
Turn around rather than crossing. Standing saltwater hides how deep it is, and the repair bill exceeds the inconvenience of a detour by a wide margin every time.
Brakes after any water crossing
Wet brake rotors and drums lose friction temporarily, and the first stop after driving through standing water can be noticeably longer than expected. Applying light pedal pressure while moving slowly for a short distance dries the surfaces and restores normal performance.
Saltwater adds a longer-term problem. Rotors surface-rust quickly and clean up with use, but caliper slide pins and parking brake cables that took saltwater corrode from the inside and seize weeks or months later. A caliper that has stopped releasing fully overheats that corner and destroys the pads and rotor unevenly.
Have the brake system inspected as part of any post-immersion check, with the slides serviced and regreased rather than simply looked at.
Interior moisture and what grows in it
This climate does not let a wet interior dry on its own. Water under carpet padding stays there, and in Savannah's humidity mold establishes within a few days. Removing the padding entirely is nearly always the right call.
Seat foam that wicked water is the other reservoir, and a seat that feels dry on top can be saturated underneath.
