Getting Your Vehicle Ready Before an Evacuation Order

An evacuation means hours in stationary traffic in summer heat with no fuel available. The preparation happens in June, not when the cone appears.

Evacuation traffic is not driving. It is many hours of stop-and-go movement in summer heat, on routes where fuel has sold out and where a breakdown blocks a lane that thousands of people need. Fuel is the constraint that catches people

Stations along evacuation routes run dry within hours of an order, and the ones still open have queues measured in hours. A vehicle that starts with a quarter tank is dependent on finding fuel under exactly the conditions where fuel is unavailable.

The workable habit is keeping the tank at least half full for the whole season rather than filling up when a storm is named. That single practice removes most of the risk.

Idling in traffic consumes fuel at a rate people underestimate, particularly with the air conditioning running, and an evacuation route can take several times its normal driving time.

The cooling system faces its worst case

Hours at walking pace in August heat with the air conditioning running is precisely the condition that finds any weakness in a cooling system, as covered in more detail elsewhere on this site. A vehicle that has been marginal all summer will overheat during an evacuation.

That matters beyond your own inconvenience. A disabled vehicle on a contraflow route affects everybody behind it, and assistance is slow or unavailable when everyone is moving in the same direction.

A pressure test, a coolant condition check, and confirmation the fan operates correctly at idle cover the realistic failure modes.

Tires, including the one you never look at

Correct pressures and adequate tread matter more when the roads are wet and the shoulders are soft. Check the spare specifically, along with the jack and the tools, because a flat during an evacuation is a problem you have to solve yourself.

Age matters as much as tread in this climate, and a tire that has been baking for seven years is a poor thing to depend on for a long hot drive.

What to carry in the vehicle

Water for everyone aboard, more than seems necessary. Any medication that would matter over several days. Phone chargers that work from the vehicle, and a battery pack as backup.

Paper documents — insurance, registration, identification, and copies of anything relating to the property — because phone service becomes unreliable and batteries run down.

Cash in small denominations, since card systems fail when networks and power do.

Before you leave

Check oil and coolant levels rather than assuming. Confirm that the air conditioning works, because it is a genuine safety item during a long stationary drive in Georgia heat with a full vehicle.

Take a photograph of the odometer and the vehicle's condition. If anything happens during the evacuation, that record establishes the starting point for a claim.

The maintenance that should already be done

Battery tested, belts and hoses inspected, brakes checked, fluids current. None of that is evacuation-specific and all of it is what determines whether a vehicle handles the demand.

Doing it in June rather than when a storm enters the forecast also means the shops are not full, which they invariably are the moment a cone appears over the coast.

Driving in the conditions ahead of a storm

Outer bands arrive well before landfall and bring heavy rain and gusting crosswinds. Standing water on I-16 and the surrounding routes causes hydroplaning at speeds well below what feels dangerous.

Reduce speed substantially, increase following distance, and avoid cruise control entirely in standing water, since it can accelerate through a hydroplane. High-profile vehicles and anything towing are affected far more by crosswind on exposed stretches and bridges.

Never drive through moving water across a road. The depth is unknowable and the roadway underneath may have washed out.

Coming back afterward

Returning is its own drive, often on roads with debris, damaged surfaces, and no working signals. Treat every dark intersection as a four-way stop.

If the vehicle sat in floodwater during the storm rather than being driven, do not start it. Water drawn into the intake destroys an engine on the first crank, and an assessment before starting is far cheaper than a replacement.
