What Georgia Sun Does to Wipers, Glass and Seals

Sun does damage that accumulates quietly and shows up as problems that look unrelated to it — a leaking sunroof, a windshield that will not clear, a door that whistles at highway speed. Wipers do not last a year here

Wiper rubber is directly exposed to sun whenever the vehicle is parked, and heat compounds the effect. The edge that has to conform precisely to curved glass hardens, splits, and stops making continuous contact.

Six months is a realistic replacement interval on a car parked outdoors in coastal Georgia, and the failure is most obvious during exactly the summer downpours where visibility matters most.

Streaks, chatter, or a band of glass the blade skips over are all replacement signals. Cleaning the blade with a damp cloth removes accumulated road film and buys a little time, though it does not restore hardened rubber.

Seals and the leaks they cause

Door, window, trunk, and sunroof seals are all rubber and all exposed. As they harden they stop compressing properly, which lets water and wind past.

Sunroof drains are the specific problem worth knowing about. A sunroof is not sealed; it is designed to collect water in a channel and route it through four small drain tubes down the pillars and out beneath the vehicle. Those tubes block with pollen and debris, which Savannah supplies generously, and the channel then overflows into the headliner.

The symptom is water appearing at the A-pillar or a damp headliner after heavy rain, and the fix is clearing the drains rather than resealing anything. Doing it annually prevents an interior water problem that is expensive and unpleasant to resolve.

Wind noise as an early warning

A door or window seal that has hardened produces wind noise before it produces a leak. A new whistle at highway speed is worth investigating rather than tolerating, because it indicates the seal has stopped doing its job and water will follow.

A silicone-based dressing on the seals a couple of times a year keeps them pliable and genuinely works. Petroleum-based dressings degrade rubber over time and should be avoided.

Glass and plastic

Headlight lenses are polycarbonate with a protective coating, and once UV has worn through that coating the plastic oxidizes and clouds. Light output drops substantially, which matters on unlit coastal roads at night.

Restoration kits work and last longer when the result is sealed with a UV-resistant clear coat. Polishing without resealing means repeating the job within a year.

Interior plastics crack and dashboards fade, and beyond appearance a cracked dash can affect airbag deployment surfaces on some vehicles.

What actually reduces it

Shade is the whole answer and everything else is mitigation. A garage, a carport, or consistently choosing a shaded space extends the life of every rubber and plastic component on the vehicle.

A reflective windshield shade protects the dashboard and lowers cabin temperature substantially, which reduces stress on the interior and on the air conditioning system that has to bring it back down.

Window tint with a genuine UV-blocking specification protects the interior and the occupants. Georgia regulates tint darkness, so it is worth confirming the specification is legal before it goes on.

Washer fluid and the spray nozzles

Nozzles block with wax residue and pollen, and a nozzle spraying to one side or not at all makes good wipers useless. Clearing them with a fine pin takes a moment.

Keep the reservoir topped up with fluid rather than water. Plain water grows algae in a warm reservoir, blocks the nozzles, and does nothing to cut the film of insects and road grime that summer here deposits on glass.

Glass itself, and why it matters more now

Windshields pit over time from sand and road debris, and pitted glass scatters light badly at night and in rain. Running a wiper across a pitted surface also wears blades faster.

Modern windshields frequently carry the camera for lane keeping and automatic emergency braking, which means a replacement requires recalibration of those systems. That raises the cost and makes repairing a chip promptly considerably more attractive than letting it spread.

Treating glass with a hydrophobic coating helps visibility in heavy rain and reduces how hard the wipers have to work.
