Tires Age Out Here Before They Wear Out
Heat and UV degrade rubber whether the car moves or not. Tread depth tells you nothing about a tire that has been baking for seven years.
Tread depth is the measure most drivers know and in this climate it is frequently the wrong one. A tire in coastal Georgia is being degraded continuously by heat and ultraviolet exposure, and plenty of tires here reach the end of their safe life with most of their tread still present. How rubber ages
Tire compounds contain antioxidants and antiozonants that migrate slowly to the surface to protect the rubber, and that supply is finite. Once it is exhausted the rubber oxidizes, hardens, and loses elasticity, which shows up as fine cracking in the sidewall and between the tread blocks.
Heat accelerates the process substantially, and direct sunlight accelerates it further. A vehicle parked outdoors in Savannah year-round subjects one side of its tires to considerably more UV than the other, which is why cracking often appears asymmetrically.
The hardening matters even before cracking is visible. A hardened tire has less grip in the wet, and wet grip is what you want most in a region that gets sudden intense afternoon storms through the summer.
Reading the date code
Every tire carries a DOT code on the sidewall ending in four digits. The first two give the week of manufacture and the last two give the year, so 3123 means the thirty-first week of 2023.
Six years is a common guideline for beginning to consider age, and ten years is widely treated as an absolute limit regardless of appearance or tread. In this climate the earlier figure is the more relevant one.
Check the spare while you are looking. A full-size spare under a vehicle or a temporary in the trunk ages at the same rate as the tires doing the work, and discovering that at the roadside is a poor time.
Pressure and summer heat
Pressure rises with temperature, so a tire set correctly in a cool morning garage reads noticeably higher after an hour on hot pavement. That is normal and expected, and the specification refers to cold pressure — measured before driving, not after.
Underinflation is the dangerous direction. An underinflated tire flexes more in the sidewall, generates more heat, and on a hot highway that combination is what produces a blowout. The stretches of I-95 and I-16 around Savannah in July are exactly the conditions that expose it.
Check monthly, cold, including the spare, and use the figure on the door jamb placard rather than the maximum printed on the tire itself.
What to look for on the sidewall
Fine cracking that looks like dry skin, particularly around the base of the tread blocks and in the sidewall flex area. Any bulge or blister, which indicates the internal structure has separated and means the tire should be replaced immediately rather than at the next service.
Uneven wear tells its own story: both shoulders worn with a good center suggests chronic underinflation, a worn center suggests the opposite, and wear on one shoulder only points at alignment.
Storage and vehicles that sit
A car that sits for long periods is harder on tires than one driven regularly, because the rubber is not flexing and the protective compounds are not being drawn to the surface. Flat spots develop and the contact patch takes constant load.
For a vehicle parked long term, inflating slightly above normal, moving it periodically, and keeping it out of direct sun all help. Covers that block UV are genuinely useful here in a way they are not in milder climates.
Rotation matters more when one side ages faster
Regular rotation evens out mechanical wear, and in this climate it also redistributes UV exposure to some extent on a vehicle that habitually parks the same way round.
Five to eight thousand miles is a sensible interval, and doing it alongside oil changes makes it happen rather than being remembered. Ask for pressures to be reset afterward, since a spare or a different position may have been at a different figure.
What a blowout actually feels like
A front tire failure pulls the vehicle hard toward that side; a rear failure produces a looser, swaying sensation. Either way the correct response is counterintuitive: hold the wheel firmly, stay off the brakes, and let the vehicle slow itself before steering gently toward the shoulder.
Braking hard during a blowout transfers weight onto the failed corner and is what turns a controllable event into a loss of control. Practising the thought in advance is worth something, because there is no time to reason it out at seventy miles an hour on I-95.
